Gau-do, Gangjin Completes Emergency Restoration After Heavy Rain Damage
Access Control Lifted... Temporary Opening of Monorail and Suspension Bridge
[Gangjin=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] On the 16th, Jeonnam Gangjin-gun announced that it had completed emergency restoration work by deploying manpower and equipment to Gau-do, which suffered damage such as hillside erosion and deck damage due to over 500mm of heavy rain that poured down on the 6th.
Gangjin-gun conducted an emergency inspection of the site to quickly restore the small landslides, hillside erosion, and deck damage on the trail within Gau-do, and from the 7th, installed safety lines in dangerous areas, the Gau-do trail, and walking paths to restrict access to Gau-do.
Due to Gau-do’s island characteristics, it was difficult to mobilize heavy equipment, but by using a boat to bring in one excavator and a dump truck and mobilizing manpower, rapid restoration work was carried out, completing emergency repairs on the eroded trail sections by the 14th and lifting access restrictions from the 15th.
Meanwhile, Gangjin-gun temporarily opened the actual suspension bridge (width 1.8m, height 15m, length 150m), which was installed with a total project cost of 4.2 billion KRW, starting from the 15th.
Additionally, the Gau-do monorail (from Gau-do summit to Cheongja Tower), constructed with a project cost of 4 billion KRW, is scheduled for temporary opening in August, providing visitors to Gau-do with an opportunity to comfortably enjoy the beautiful island scenery unique to Gangjin Bay.
County Governor Lee Seung-ok said, “As a result of our full efforts over the past week for rapid damage restoration, access to Gau-do has become possible,” and added, “We will do our best to prepare measures to prevent recurrence and take preventive actions so that the same damage does not happen again, and we hope many people will use the temporarily opened suspension bridge and monorail.”
