Muan County Sells 9 Tons of Onions Through Exchange Cooperation with Guri City, Gyeonggi Province

Onion Buying Campaign Officially Expands to the Seoul Metropolitan Area

[Muan＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) has officially launched an onion purchasing campaign to help local farms struggling due to COVID-19 expand into the Seoul metropolitan area.

According to the county on the 15th, on the 13th, an onion purchasing campaign was held for the purpose of a mutual partnership event with Guri City, Gyeonggi-do (Mayor Ahn Seung-nam).

This event was the first onion purchasing campaign promoted together with a metropolitan local government, and on that day, Guri City Hall officials, traditional market merchant associations, and civic groups actively participated in helping farms by purchasing 900 bags (9 tons) of 10kg onions.

The county originally planned to hold a mutual partnership signing ceremony with Guri City and conduct promotional events for agricultural specialty products such as onion consumption promotion and high-quality brand rice promotion under the market merchant association's supervision.

However, due to the elevation of COVID-19 social distancing to level 4, all face-to-face events were completely canceled, and only a simple on-site distribution event was held with a minimal number of attendees.

This event served as an opportunity to expand exchanges and deepen understanding between urban and rural areas, and going forward, Muan County plans to expand exchanges with urban local governments.

Governor Kim San said, “We thank Guri City, the market merchant association, and civic group officials who actively participated in the onion purchasing campaign by forming a mutual partnership with our county. Once COVID-19 social distancing is eased, we will carry out various exchange activities with Guri City.”
