View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gyeongju City announced on the 15th that it will create a large-scale transfer parking lot (Hwangnam Public Parking Lot) with a capacity of 1,100 spaces near the terminus of Gangbyeon-ro, connecting Gyeongju IC on the Gyeongbu Expressway and the express/intercity bus terminal via the shortest route, at the entrance of the Dongbu Historic Site.
As a linkage project for Gangbyeon-ro, which is scheduled to open in November, it is expected to greatly help alleviate parking difficulties for tourists visiting Gyeongju and revitalize the local economy due to increased use of public transportation such as route buses and taxis.
Last November, it passed the local financial investment review by Gyeongbuk Province, and in June this year, it also received approval for changes to cultural heritage from the Cultural Heritage Administration.
Currently, Gyeongju City is undergoing urban management plan changes and land compensation procedures. With a project cost of 18 billion KRW, construction is planned to start in the second half of next year, aiming for completion in December 2023.
As a facility to assist passengers in transferring to public transportation, in addition to the 1,100 parking spaces, it will be equipped with bus stops and taxi stands featuring convenience facilities such as BIS (Bus Information System) terminals and public Wi-Fi. Also, an unmanned rental station for Gyeongju City public bicycles, scheduled to be introduced in March next year, will be installed to enhance user convenience.
In particular, Gyeongju City is actively promoting the introduction of shuttle buses and tour buses that circulate nearby tourist attractions with Hwangnam Public Parking Lot as the starting and ending point, as well as the introduction of small electric buses connecting the Dongbu Historic Site and Hwangridan-gil.
Considering that it will take more than two years to complete Hwangnam Public Parking Lot, the city plans to complete the currently under-construction 12,000㎡ 'Seocheon Riverside Multipurpose Plaza' by next month to alleviate parking difficulties in the downtown area.

Mayor Joo Nak-young explained, "We are actively reviewing the introduction of various transportation means such as shuttle buses and electric buses that circulate major tourist attractions including Hwangridan-gil, Daereungwon, Gyochon Hanok Village, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, and Gyeongju Eupseong, with the large transfer parking lot as the starting and ending point."
