"Oryun-gi Gal S21 Also Shines at the Olympics" Samsung Begins Official Partnership Activities for Tokyo Olympics
Strengthening Digital Marketing with Metaverse, Virtual Media Center, and SNS Campaigns
Providing Approximately 17,000 Latest Smartphones to All Olympic and Paralympic Athletes
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] With the Tokyo Olympics just a week away, Samsung Electronics, the only domestic 'Olympic Global Partner,' is launching its Olympic marketing campaign. Considering the global COVID-19 situation, Samsung Electronics will showcase expanded contactless digital marketing compared to previous events.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 15th that it will begin activities as the official 'Olympic Partner' in the wireless communications sector. Samsung started as a regional partner for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and has participated as a global partner since the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics in Japan. The company has also secured sponsorship contracts through the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics in the United States.
Samsung Electronics will provide approximately 17,000 units of the 'Galaxy S21 5G Tokyo 2020 Olympic Edition' to all athletes participating in the Olympics and Paralympics. The Olympic Edition, which has the same basic performance as the Galaxy S21, features a Phantom Blue color with the Olympic rings placed below the Galaxy logo on the back cover. The default application icons, wallpaper, and lock screen are all customized with a dedicated theme tailored for the Tokyo Olympics. Samsung has been providing Olympic Edition phones to athletes since the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia and expanded this to include the Paralympics at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
During this Olympics, Samsung Electronics has opened the 'Samsung Galaxy Tokyo 2020 Media Center' and 'Samsung Galaxy House' using virtual technology for sports fans and media personnel worldwide who cannot attend in person. Starting today, the virtual media center, composed of 3D screens, offers real-time news and photos related to the Olympics and Paralympics.
Additionally, at 5 p.m. on the 16th, Samsung will open the doors to the Samsung Galaxy House on the metaverse platform Zepeto. Visitors to the Galaxy House can enjoy 20 types of video booths featuring content related to the Tokyo Olympics and Tokyo Olympic pins. The top floor of the Galaxy House will operate a BTS selfie zone, unveiled for the first time, for four weeks. Furthermore, Samsung plans to focus on mobile and digital-centered marketing activities, including a tweet campaign to send support and encouragement to participating athletes.
Although limited, offline marketing activities will also be conducted. Samsung Electronics will operate showcases at two locations: Harajuku in Tokyo and the Olympic Village. 'Galaxy Harajuku,' opened in March 2019, is the largest Galaxy showcase experience center worldwide, where visitors can see mobile products firsthand and enjoy interactive experiences. The 'Galaxy Athlete Lounge' set up in the Olympic Village is an athlete-exclusive experience space where athletes receive Olympic Edition phones and can enjoy photo zones, message walls, and various Galaxy devices.
The 'Team Galaxy,' composed of 11 world-class athletes including volleyball queen Kim Yeon-kyung, will be managed and supported to act as brand ambassadors for Galaxy. Team Galaxy will participate in the Tokyo Olympic global TV commercial featuring Sky Brown (13), the youngest British national representative competing in skateboarding, and will also carry out the ‘Voices of Galaxy’ campaign with all Team Galaxy members.
