‘Island Daylily Festival’ Held on 1004 Island Shinan Hongdo
‘Hongdowonchuri’ Plant Name Holds Unique Native Genetic Resource Value as Separate Entity
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Sinan County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) is hosting the ‘Island Daylily Festival’ on Hongdo, one of the most desired tourist destinations in South Korea.
According to the county on the 13th, the ‘Island Daylily Festival,’ held for ten days from the 16th to the 25th, goes beyond simple marine tourism and features land photo zones in Hongdo’s District 1 and District 2 villages, set against the backdrop of daylily flowers blooming along Hongdo’s mysterious coastline.
Sinan County, which is developing a one-island-one-theme park, declared Hongdo as the Daylily Island in 2019.
The ‘Hongdo Daylily,’ which has a distinct botanical name, has flowers that are notably larger and more beautiful than other daylilies, with a fine texture, making it highly valuable for ornamental purposes and as a unique native genetic resource.
Additionally, the ‘Hongdo Daylily’ shares the cultural environment and history of Hongdo. While mainland residents endured the barley famine, Hongdo residents made side dishes from daylily leaves to withstand hunger.
