[AKYUNG Poll] 'Presidential Primary Effect' Democratic Party Support Rises... People Power Party Declines After a Delay
Democratic Party 35.4%, People Power Party 31.9%
Democratic Party Leads Among Ages 20 to 50
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] While the support rate for the People Power Party, which had been on the rise since the party convention, has turned downward, the support rate for the Democratic Party of Korea has risen again. In this survey, the Democratic Party's support rate was slightly ahead of the People Power Party's within the margin of error. This is interpreted as being influenced by the increased public interest in the Democratic Party, which recently began its presidential candidate preliminary primaries.
Asia Economy commissioned Win-Gi Korea Consulting to conduct a public opinion poll from the 10th to the 11th targeting 1,011 voters nationwide aged 18 and over (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response). When asked which party they usually support or have a slight preference for, 35.4% responded that they support the Democratic Party of Korea, which was higher than the 31.9% who supported the People Power Party. The gap between the two parties was 3.5 percentage points, within the margin of error. As the People Power Party's support rate had been rising, the gap narrowed to 1.8 percentage points in the previous survey conducted on the 12th to 13th of last month, but the Democratic Party has since widened the gap again.
The Democratic Party's support rate increased by 2.8 percentage points compared to the previous survey, while the People Power Party's decreased by 0.5 percentage points. The People Power Party, which had attracted attention due to the election of its leader Lee Jun-seok and the emergence of presidential hopefuls outside the party, has recently seen opposition candidates embroiled in various controversies or showing slow progress. Compared to the Democratic Party, which has taken an earlier lead on the presidential race, public interest appears to have waned.
Support among voters in their 20s, which had been high for the People Power Party until the previous survey, showed a 0.5 percentage point lead for the Democratic Party in this survey. As a result, the Democratic Party held an advantage in support from those in their 20s through 50s, while the People Power Party was dominant only among those aged 60 and above. By gender, the Democratic Party remained higher among women (38.5%), and the People Power Party among men (36.4%).
Regionally, the Democratic Party generally showed higher support rates, but the People Power Party's support remained strong only in the conservative stronghold of TK (Daegu and Gyeongbuk). The Democratic Party had higher support in Seoul, the metropolitan area, Chungcheong region, PK (Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam), Honam region, and Gangwon region, while the People Power Party's support was higher only in the TK region. Support rates for other parties were as follows: Open Democratic Party 6.6%, Justice Party 4.5%, and People Party 4.3%. The proportion of undecided or no-party voters was 15.2%.
