Gwangju Nam-gu Busy Preventing Heatwave Damage Among Vulnerable Groups
Heatwave Countermeasure Period Set Until Late September... Support for Cooling Costs at Senior Centers and Installation of Heat Relief Shelters
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeongnae) is busy preparing for the heatwave by supporting cooling supplies for vulnerable groups and elderly citizens using senior centers, as well as providing cooling expenses for each senior center to prevent heatwave damage.
Nam-gu announced on the 12th that it will fully implement a comprehensive heatwave-related plan as the monsoon front retreats and the scorching heat begins.
To protect the safety of vulnerable groups and minimize damage from heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, the heatwave response period has been set until the end of September.
They plan to focus all efforts on heatwave response measures such as installing cooling shelters and shade tents, and operating water spraying trucks.
First, starting from the 15th, the ‘Cooling Supplies Support Project’ will be carried out for vulnerable households in the district.
With a heatwave response budget of 47 million KRW, hats and parasols will be purchased and provided to these households.
Additionally, to prevent elderly citizens vulnerable to heatwaves from suffering heatstroke and heat-related illnesses, fans will be provided to indoor cooling shelters such as senior centers.
In particular, to allow free use of senior centers to avoid the midday heat, a budget of 51 million KRW will be invested to support cooling expenses of 200,000 KRW for senior centers designated as cooling shelters.
Shade tents, which are heatwave reduction facilities, will be additionally installed in various parts of the city to help people avoid the scorching sun.
Considering areas with frequent pedestrian traffic, waiting times at traffic lights, and sidewalk widths, shade tent shelters will be set up at 64 locations such as in front of crosswalks, and trees providing cool shade will be planted.
Along with this, water spraying trucks will be operated mainly on major roads and residential backstreets in the district to absorb radiant heat from the hot roads and reduce fine dust.
Furthermore, heatwave response guidelines for public action will be actively promoted through the Nam-gu Office website and newsletters issued by the district office to minimize damage caused by the heatwave.
