View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] In the past week, 511 students from kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high schools were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is the highest number of confirmed cases recorded since the first semester began.
According to the Ministry of Education on the 8th, from the 1st to the 7th of this month, 511 students nationwide from kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high schools tested positive. This is an increase of 162 cases compared to the previous week. On average, 73 students were confirmed positive each day.
The number of student cases in the past week reached the highest level since April. This surge is mainly due to a rapid increase in cases centered in the metropolitan area. In Gyeonggi-do Bucheon, 37 cases were confirmed across 22 schools related to sports facilities. In academies located in Uijeongbu, 21 cases were confirmed across 10 schools.
The number of confirmed cases among school staff in the past week was 52, an increase of 9 from the previous week. The daily average number of confirmed cases was 7.4.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, 99 schools were unable to hold in-person classes, a decrease of 100 schools compared to the previous week. By region, there were 37 schools in Seoul and 34 in Gyeonggi-do. Sixty-one schools observed discretionary holidays.
As of 4 p.m. the previous day, 4,793,442 students from kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high schools attended in-person classes, accounting for 80.8% of all students. By school level, 80.2% of elementary school students, 77.6% of middle school students, and 79.4% of high school students attended in-person classes.

In the past week, 266 new university students and 27 university staff members were confirmed positive. Compared to the previous week, student cases increased by 30 and staff cases increased by 9. On average, 38 students and 3.9 staff members were confirmed positive daily. The cumulative number of confirmed university student cases this semester is 2,840, and university staff cases total 276.
