Chungnam Province announced on the 8th that, following the cumulative occurrence of 60 confirmed cases among trainees at the Nonsan Training Center, COVID-19 diagnostic tests will be conducted on a total of 4,333 individuals (all trainees of the 28th Regiment and medical staff, etc.) who may have been exposed to infection.
According to the province, the trainee who tested positive was admitted on the 14th of last month and had tested negative in the first and second diagnostic tests upon admission.
However, the province explained that symptoms appeared during training after the diagnostic tests, and a subsequent test confirmed a positive result.
Accordingly, the province plans to conduct a full investigation of trainees and others within the Nonsan Training Center to prevent further spread.
In particular, 984 individuals who had direct contact with confirmed cases are being isolated in a separate area within the training center, and 3,937 individuals awaiting test results will be assigned treatment beds and undergo epidemiological investigations based on their test outcomes to implement containment measures.
Additionally, rapid self-test kits are being distributed to 337 multi-use facilities near the training center, including general restaurants and beauty salons, to prevent further spread of the infectious disease into the local community.
The province is also reviewing adjustments to social distancing levels. A provincial official stated, “Most of the recent confirmed cases are cluster infections originating from the Nonsan Training Center, with little connection to the local community,” adding, “Above all, due to the highly closed nature of the Nonsan Training Center facilities, we are currently focusing our efforts on blocking cluster infections within the Nonsan area.”
