South Pacific Island Nation Samoa Decides to Withdraw from Tokyo Olympics
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The South Pacific island nation of Samoa has decided not to send a delegation to the Tokyo Olympics, which opens on the 23rd, according to 'Radio New Zealand (RNZ)' on the 1st.
The Samoan government made the decision to withdraw yesterday, citing the spread of COVID-19 in Japan as the reason.
Samoa had planned to send athletes in sports such as weightlifting, boxing, and athletics.
Samoa became the second country, after North Korea, to decide not to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.
Earlier, several famous athletes, including women's tennis star Serena Williams, men's tennis star Rafael Nadal, and NBA star shooter Stephen Curry, had announced their withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics.
