Mapo-gu Supports Free Installation of 27 Individual Food Waste Weighing Devices
Individual Disposal Costs Based on Amount Disposed, Encouraging Voluntary Reduction... Environmental Exhibition 'Mapo Eco Curator' Resource Circulation Project Conducted with University Students
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) will support the installation of 27 RFID individual waste meters in apartment complexes within the district to reduce the amount of food waste generated and improve residents' convenience by reducing odors.
Since 2015, the district has supported the installation of RFID individual waste meters in a total of 190 complexes in the area, and it was reported that this has resulted in approximately a 25% reduction in food waste generation compared to before the distribution.
The 27 additional units to be supported this time will be installed in apartment complexes using designated waste bags, expanding support to complexes that have not previously received installation benefits and small-scale apartment complexes that can share the waste meters.
Applications for free installation are currently being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until stocks run out. Once an application is received, the district will review eligibility conditions and proceed with site selection and installation work.
The application form can be found on the Mapo-gu website, and applications can be submitted in person at the Mapo-gu Office Cleaning Administration Division.
Installation support conditions for project sites include ▲designation of a management entity (head/deputy) ▲consent from all household members (such as consent from the residents' representative meeting) ▲a location where continuous power supply and space can be provided (considering parking, collection, and safety issues). The district will comprehensively review the suitability of the application sites, including installation utilization, to make the final selection.
In addition, the district is conducting the ‘Mapo Eco Curator’ project, a university student environmental exhibition to raise awareness of resource circulation.
This project is part of Seoul City's ‘Resource Circulation Education for Sustainable Seoul’ initiative. Starting next month, two sessions each of resource circulation education and curating education will be provided, and participating university students who complete the courses will plan and conduct resource circulation exhibitions in teams twice starting in August.
Any university student interested in resource circulation issues can apply in teams of about five members. Selected teams will receive exhibition activity funds worth approximately 1 million KRW per team and 50,000 KRW per exhibition as individual activity support.
For more details and application methods related to ‘Mapo Eco Curator,’ please check the Mapo-gu website.
