[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Electronics has launched the world's first robot vacuum cleaner equipped with Intel's artificial intelligence (AI) solution in the US and European markets, marking the beginning of its full-scale overseas market expansion.
According to industry sources on the 29th, Samsung Electronics recently released the new robot vacuum cleaner model 'Jet Bot AI+' in the US and Europe. The Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with Intel's AI solution 'Intel Movidius,' which is involved in object recognition and autonomous driving. Among global robot vacuum cleaners, the Jet Bot AI+ is the first product to incorporate this solution. Intel Movidius can be installed in AI accelerators, standalone smart cameras, drones, and robots. It is known to increase efficiency by more than 10 times compared to existing products without power consumption.
A Samsung Electronics official explained, "The AI function is useful for the robot vacuum cleaner to recognize obstacles and clean without blind spots through autonomous driving," adding, "After comparing the performance of various candidates, we adopted Intel's solution for the first time among home appliance product groups."
According to Samsung Electronics, the Jet Bot AI+ can recognize the largest number of objects among robot vacuum cleaners released domestically by pre-learning over one million images. It is equipped with a 'LiDAR' sensor used in autonomous vehicles to create image maps of various areas inside the home such as bedrooms, living rooms, and laundry spaces, and it cleans by moving autonomously.
It also features the industry's first 'active stereo camera' type 3D sensor, capable of detecting all obstacles larger than 1㎤. Samsung Electronics explained that this allows the vacuum to safely clean around items that require careful handling, such as ceramics, flower vases, glass cups, and electric wires. It operates even in dark places like under furniture or rooms with the lights off.
The Jet Bot AI+ is also equipped with a digital inverter motor that enhances suction power. It has a function to automatically detect floor materials and cleans more powerfully on materials prone to dust accumulation, such as carpets. Samsung Electronics introduced that it can capture 99.99% of fine dust particles, including those sized 0.5 to 4.2㎛ (micrometers).
After cleaning, the Jet Bot AI+ returns to the docking space called the 'Clean Station,' where it automatically empties the dustbin while charging. Additionally, if consumers use the 'Pet Care' service provided in the Samsung SmartThings application (app), they can check the status of their pets in real-time from outside through the camera attached to the robot vacuum cleaner.
Since last month, Samsung Electronics has been introducing 'Bespoke Home,' a lifestyle-customized home appliance concept, to overseas markets. Following the launch of Bespoke refrigerators in Europe and North America, the company plans to expand the product lineup. The Jet Bot AI+ is scheduled to be released in South America, Southeast Asia, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the second half of this year.
