Culture Ministry to Hold Discussion on 30th Commemorating '60+ Year of Books'
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 28th that it will hold the 1st forum on the 30th at 2 p.m. at the Seoul Youth Culture Space to commemorate the '2021 60+ Year of Books.'
The '60+ Year of Books' forum was organized to socially publicize measures to improve the rapidly increasing reading environment for the elderly, as society approaches a super-aged stage. At this first forum, moderated by Professor Yoojin Kim of the Department of Social Welfare at Kyungpook National University, the importance and necessity of books and reading for the elderly generation will be discussed from social welfare and medical perspectives.
To consider the necessity of reading for the elderly, former Yonsei University Professor Kyutak Sung will present on 'Happiness in Old Age, Reading, and Longevity.' Professor Seongho Yoo of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine will speak on 'Life, Death, and Books,' and ▲ Professor Jiwon Han of the Department of Psychiatry at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital will present on 'Healthy Reading for Dementia Prevention and Treatment.' Afterwards, Sangwon Ham, Manager at the Seoul Senior Welfare Center, and Suhee Jeon, Manager at the Jungwon Senior Welfare Center in Seongnam, will review field usage cases related to reading welfare services for the elderly. Following this, Professor Beomjung Kim of the Department of Social Welfare at Chung-Ang University will continue the discussion.
Future forums will continue until November with topics such as 'The Present and Future of the Senior Publishing Market,' 'How Far Have Library Services for the Elderly Come,' and 'Senior Reading Clubs to Enjoy Together.'

A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, "Through this forum, we aim to inform the 60+ generation of the value of reading and broadly discuss the diagnosis and improvement measures for the entire book ecosystem for the elderly," adding, "We hope to establish a foundation for a reading culture for the elderly in preparation for a super-aged society."
