Nowon-gu 'Seokgye Station Cultural Park' Reborn as Healing Plaza
A Rest Area to Experience Nature with Tree Planting, Decorative Flower Beds, and Water Basins... Outdoor Stage Maintenance... Stage Direction Adjustment, Open Lawn Seating... Utilized as a Cultural and Arts Performance Venue... Air Jumping Dome for Children and Adolescents, Various Exercise Equipment Also Installed
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that Seokgye Station Cultural Park will be transformed into a space where people can enjoy nature, exercise, and culture, and will open from July.
Seokgye Station is a transfer station between Subway Line 1 and Line 6, located at the boundary between Nowon and Seongbuk districts, and at the intersection of major roads. Due to these advantages, it has a large floating population and a developed commercial area frequented by students from major universities.
Seokgye Station Cultural Park (47-45 Wolgye-dong) is a plaza created in 2010 on a partially covered section of the Uicheon Stream, covering an area of 3,900㎡, and is almost the only open space around Seokgye Station.
The district office promoted a remodeling project to transform Seokgye Station Cultural Park from a meeting plaza into a healing space for residents and to improve space efficiency.
After about a year of preparation, including expert consultation, design, and resident briefings, construction began in February this year and finishing work was completed in June.
The most noticeable change in the renewed Seokgye Station Cultural Park is the enriched green space.
They planted 61 trees of 11 species including pine trees, and about 10,000 shrubs of 12 species such as boxwood.
Small gardens composed of decorative flower beds using planters and various herbaceous plants were arranged in curved shapes. Additionally, a fountain pond was added, transforming the previously barren space into an area where one can feel nature within the city.
Space usability was also enhanced. The existing stage was reoriented, and the audience seating was converted into an open lawn area so that more residents can enjoy performances. The district plans to satisfy residents’ cultural needs through small-scale performances such as busking.
The space, which had a mix of sculptures, landscaping facilities, bicycle racks, and unused facilities that threatened both aesthetics and safety, was improved by removing unnecessary structures and relocating bicycle racks based on residents’ opinions.
Lastly, it is a space where physical activities can be enjoyed. An air jumping dome was installed under a shade to allow children to play, and exercise equipment was newly installed on one side for youth and adults to enjoy community sports together. Between these, a pergola and benches were created so that guardians can rest while watching their children.
Meanwhile, the district is also promoting the ‘Seokgye-ro Street Garden’ project in the space extending from Wolgye 1-dong Community Center to Gwangwoon University Station. This project integrates about 320 meters of sidewalks and 3,000㎡ of green space to create the feeling of walking through a forest. It is scheduled to be completed in early July and is expected to become a communication space for residents in the Wolgye-dong area along with Seokgye Station Cultural Park.
