'Banmi Solidarity' China-Russia Hold Another Summit in a Month
Held in Video Conference Format on the 28th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] As China and Russia grow closer in response to the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a virtual summit on the 28th.
According to China Central Television (CCTV) on the 25th, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced this in a statement. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not provide specific details regarding the background or topics of the meeting.
This virtual summit comes just over a month after the two leaders jointly attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a bilateral nuclear cooperation project via video on the 19th of last month.
Additionally, this meeting takes place three days before the Chinese Communist Party’s 100th anniversary on the 1st of next month, a significant event for the Chinese government, and the 16th of next month marks the 20th anniversary of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.
Moreover, amid rapidly shifting international dynamics, including U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent efforts to counter China through the G7 summit and NATO summit, the meeting of the China-Russia leaders, who have maintained an 'anti-American alliance,' carries important implications.
President Biden previously held his first bilateral face-to-face meeting with President Putin on the 16th (local time) in Geneva, Switzerland, since taking office.
It is reported that some common ground was reached despite strained relations between the two countries, and some have evaluated that the U.S. attempted to drive a wedge between China and Russia.
Before the U.S.-Russia meeting, President Putin stated in an interview with NBC News, "China and Russia have developed an unprecedented strategic partnership," adding, "There are attempts to undermine China-Russia relations, and these attempts have translated into concrete policies."
The White House also announced on the 17th that President Biden is considering a summit with President Xi Jinping.
