Ahead of the Peak Beer Season in Summer... OB Beer Union to Strike Starting from the 28th
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The OB Beer labor union will go on strike starting from the 28th.
According to industry sources on the 24th, the OB Beer branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ National Chemical, Textile, and Food Industry Union and the OB Beer labor union of the National Chemical Workers’ Federation held a strike vote to win the 2021 collective bargaining and approved the strike.
The union members voted over eight days from the 9th to the 17th. The vote counting on the 23rd showed that out of 1,474 registered union members, 1,404 (95.25%) participated. There were 70 abstentions, 1,228 votes in favor, 146 against, and 30 invalid ballots.
Previously, OB Beer management and the union conducted wage negotiations but failed to close the gap. The union demanded a 7.5% wage increase, but the company proposed freezing wages and paying a consolation bonus of 500,000 KRW, which ended in a deadlock.
Accordingly, the OB Beer union will hold a declaration ceremony at 6 p.m. on the 28th at the Cheongju plant and commence the strike.
An OB Beer official stated, "We will continue constant dialogue with the union to amicably resolve the wage negotiations," adding, "Ahead of the summer peak season, we will do our best in dialogue and persuasion to minimize the damage that the company, employees, consumers, and partner companies may suffer due to the strike."
