Jeju Coast Guard, Strengthens Crackdown on Maritime Smuggling and Illegal Immigration International Crimes
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Regional Maritime Police Agency (Chief Oh Sang-kwon) announced on the 23rd that it will strengthen crackdowns in response to the continuous occurrence of smuggling activities through the West Sea and the increased likelihood of new types of international crimes following the suspension of the visa-free entry system in Jeju since February last year.
According to the Jeju Regional Maritime Police Agency, domestic vessels attempting to smuggle domestically produced and foreign cigarettes from Chinese ships in international waters into the country were caught three times (in January, April, and June) at Mokpo and Gunsan.
The Maritime Police anticipated that smuggling activities via sea routes would continue to increase due to the suspension and restrictions on transportation means such as international flights and cruises entering the country amid COVID-19.
The Jeju Maritime Police Agency is strengthening crackdowns on international crimes such as maritime smuggling and visa-free illegal entry by ▲ cooperating with related organizations such as the Jeju Marine Fisheries Management Team ▲ inspecting vulnerable areas including ports and harbors ▲ establishing and promoting a public reporting network for international crimes.
