On the 22nd (local time), consulting firm Mercer revealed this through the "2021 Cost of Living Ranking." The survey was conducted in March, comparing and analyzing over 200 items such as housing prices, transportation costs, and food expenses across 209 cities worldwide.
As a result, Ashgabat rose from 2nd place last year to 1st place this year. Mercer explained that the economic crisis led to food shortages, and ongoing hyperinflation caused overall living costs to surge. Hong Kong ranked 2nd. Hong Kong had held the top spot for three consecutive years until last year but dropped one rank this year.
3rd place went to Beirut, Lebanon, which faced a series of adversities including the COVID-19 situation and the massive Beirut port explosion, rising 42 places from last year. Tokyo, Japan; Zurich, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China ranked 4th to 6th respectively. Singapore, Geneva, Beijing, and Bern followed.
Seoul maintained its 11th place ranking from last year. New York, USA, dropped 8 places to 14th. Los Angeles ranked 20th, and San Francisco ranked 25th.
