Seoul Selected as the World's 3rd Largest City for Hosting International Conferences for 6 Consecutive Years
Third Highest Number of International Conferences Held Worldwide Last Year, Including Online and Hybrid Events
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 22nd that it was selected as the third city in the world to host the most international conferences last year despite the COVID-19 pandemic situation. This marks six consecutive years from 2015 to 2020.
According to the international conference statistics report released by the Union of International Associations (UIA) on the 18th, Seoul hosted 150 international conferences last year, capturing a 3.5% share of the global market and ranking third among cities worldwide for hosting international conferences.
The rankings by major cities are as follows: 1st Singapore (780 events), 2nd Brussels (290 events), 3rd Seoul (150 events), 4th Tokyo (122 events), and 5th Vienna (109 events).
The UIA stated that a total of 4,242 international conferences were held in 802 cities worldwide last year, representing a 66% decrease compared to the previous year due to the impact of COVID-19. This figure includes not only on-site events but also international conferences held online and in hybrid formats.
Seoul City and the Seoul Tourism Foundation have been implementing policies to digitalize private MICE events by expanding support from traditional on-site events to online and hybrid events since last year to overcome the COVID crisis.
