According to Haenam-gun on the 18th, the selection of the Jeonnam forest trails to walk, aimed at discovering and promoting excellent forest trail resources in the southern provinces, received applications from 22 sites across 15 cities and counties. After document review, expert on-site evaluation, and preference surveys using SNS, the Jangchun Forest Trail was honored with the top award.
Haenam-gun secured a commendation as the best institution along with a prize of 1 million KRW and an incentive of 150 million KRW.
The Jangchun Forest Trail stretches about 4 km from the entrance of Duryunsan, Haenam’s famous mountain, to the main gate of Daeheungsa Temple. It is adjacent to a valley, making it the most suitable for this year’s theme, “Healing Forest Trail Walking Along the Waterway.”
Because of the abundance of trees, it remains green all year round and blooms with flowers, giving the feeling of spring at all times, hence the name Jangchun. The subtropical forest and valley blend to boast outstanding scenery. The gentle slope makes it easily accessible for various age groups.
Inside the forest trail, a walking path is established where over 800 species of broadleaf trees, including cedar, arborvitae, and camellia, form a cluster, allowing visitors to enjoy forest bathing. Wooden bridges and other structures are also built over the Gugokyusu (Nine-bend flowing water) valley, creating a beautiful landscape.
Walking through the forest trail formed by various plants and primeval forest, visitors can encounter historic sites holding many legends, including the UNESCO World Heritage Daeheungsa Temple, National Treasure No. 308 Buk Mireukam Rock-carved Seated Buddha, the Millennium Tree, Iljiam Hermitage, and Nam Mireukam Hermitage.
