Gwangju Fire Headquarters Dedicates Efforts to 'Life Rescue Training' in Preparation for Summer Water Accidents
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Fire Safety Headquarters is working hard in training to prepare for water-related accidents during the summer season.
On the 17th, the Gwangju Fire Headquarters announced that it conducted a life-saving training to improve underwater rescue capabilities at Hamdong Reservoir in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.
Water-related accidents in the Gwangju area over the past three years have been increasing annually, with 9 cases in 2018, 12 cases in 2019, and 29 cases in 2020. From June to August, 30 cases (60%) occurred, rescuing 37 people (84%).
The training involved 49 special rescue team members from the 119 Special Rescue Unit and was conducted using fire helicopters, life-saving boats, and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) for search training of people in distress, as well as underwater rescue training using underwater scooters and sonar imaging equipment.
With the recent increase in the utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles, training was also conducted for water surface search and team-based life-saving techniques using fire drones, assuming various scenarios.
Along with the training, Chief Choi Mincheol of the Fire Safety Headquarters inspected the training situation and preparations for water-related accidents during the summer season.

Chief Choi stated, “Due to recent abnormal weather such as heavy rain and typhoons, there have been significant casualties and property damage. We will make every effort to prepare so that citizens can be safely rescued in the event of water-related accidents through field-centered training that simulates real situations.”
