Kim Kyung-soo and Lee Jae-myung Join Forces for Mutual Development of Seoul Metropolitan Area and Non-Metropolitan Regions
Policy Agreement Signed on the 17th Between Gyeongnam Province, Gyeonggi Province, Gyeongnam Research Institute, and Gyeonggi Research Institute
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Gyeongnam Province and Gyeonggi Province have agreed to cooperate for the mutual development of the metropolitan area and non-metropolitan areas.
On the 17th, Gyeongnam Province, Gyeongnam Research Institute, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeonggi Research Institute signed a policy agreement for joint development of local governments at the Gyeongnam Provincial Office, attended by Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo and Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung.
This agreement was realized after Gyeongnam responded positively to a proposal made by Gyeonggi Province in February.
According to the agreement, Gyeongnam Province and Gyeonggi Province will cooperate on four key policy issues: regional ultra-wide cooperation for national balanced development policy, revitalization of inter-Korean exchanges, joint response to the discharge of Fukushima radioactive contaminated water, and fostering the marine marina industry.
Among these, the 'regional ultra-wide cooperation for national balanced development policy' is an agenda that Governor Kim has consistently advocated.
In this regard, Governor Lee also expressed his support for Governor Kim’s balanced development policy through his Facebook in February.
Since Gyeongnam Province has agreed to cooperate with Gyeonggi Province on the 'Mega City Strategy,' it is expected to further strengthen regional balanced development nationwide.
In his greeting at the signing ceremony, Governor Kim emphasized, "For Gyeongnam, this is a strategy for the mutual development of the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, which we will promote together with the government."
He continued, "Among the various conditions for the success of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) Mega City, two are most important: first, the government’s joint promotion as a national policy, and second, cooperation with the metropolitan area."
In response, Governor Lee stated, "The task of national land balanced development has become a very important issue for us," and added, "It is clear that the current situation, where local areas worry about extinction and the metropolitan area worries about overpopulation, is undesirable."
He further said, "Priority investment and policy consideration for local areas facing the threat of extinction are absolutely necessary," and responded, "The Mega City Strategy is a timely and effective policy. I will pay special attention and work together."
Gyeongnam Province plans to make this a model case of cooperation between local governments for solving regional livelihood issues and promoting mutual development between the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas through mutual cooperation with Gyeonggi Province.
