[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The Ministry of Science and ICT will open a call for new projects under the 2021 Bridge Convergence Research and Development (R&D) Program, which supports the convergence of R&D outcomes, starting from the 18th.

This program is a new initiative that promotes the practical application by converging research outcomes created through national R&D projects. In the first phase, institutions holding research outcomes lead efforts to enhance the technology level for practical application, and in the second phase, companies participate to promote practical application aimed at creating new markets.

Selected research teams will be supported with a total of 2.85 billion KRW over a research period of 3 years and 6 months (approximately 700 million KRW per year in phase 1, and around 900 million KRW per year in phase 2).

This year, based on demand surveys, projects corresponding to eight Requests for Proposals (RFPs) aimed at a healthy society, a safe society, and a sustainable society will be solicited. One to two projects per RFP will be selected through an open call.

The nine selected research teams will receive support during the research period, including regular performance enhancement mentoring from the Bridge Convergence Support Group, performance indicator development and inspection, and exchange meetings between researchers and demanders (companies, local governments, etc.). The Bridge Convergence R&D Program is expected to serve as a bridge filling the gap between fundamental technology and commercialization technology.

Lee Chang-yoon, Director of Basic and Fundamental Research Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “To actively respond to rapidly changing society, a new form of convergence research is necessary,” and added, “We will actively support the creation of new value by utilizing existing R&D outcomes.”
