[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to promptly pass the substitute holiday bill in the June National Assembly session.
Floor Leader Yoon Ho-jung stated at the floor strategy meeting held on the morning of the 15th, "We will return the lost red-letter days," and added, "We will swiftly process the substitute holiday bill currently pending in the June National Assembly."
Yoon emphasized, "The legalization of substitute holidays guarantees the public's right to rest, stimulates domestic consumption, and is a win-win strategy that induces employment," adding, "A public hearing on the substitute holiday law will be held tomorrow at the Administrative Safety Committee, and we will expedite the bill's passage so that it can be implemented immediately from the upcoming Liberation Day."
All four remaining holidays this year, except for Chuseok, fall on weekends, leading to remarks about a 'holiday drought.'
Yoon said, "Our country has become an advanced nation, having been invited to the G7 for two consecutive years, but workers' working hours are still the second longest among OECD countries. The designation of substitute holidays is an inevitable demand of the times," and added, "The Democratic Party will do its best to contribute to the happiness and quality of life of the people by adding domestic consumption on holidays through the holiday addition law."
He also urged the opposition party to cooperate in urgently passing livelihood-related bills such as the Small Business Loss Compensation Act during the June National Assembly session.
Yoon pointed out, "Starting tomorrow with the negotiation group leaders' speeches, the June National Assembly will enter its full schedule, but the legislative barricades set up by the People Power Party are blocking livelihood legislation activities everywhere," and said, "Although the Small Business Loss Compensation Act is being discussed in the standing committee, urgent livelihood tasks including this law are not being properly handled."
Regarding the installation of CCTV in operating rooms, he said, "Yesterday, I asked Representative Lee Jun-seok about his position on the operating room CCTV installation law, and he gave a general answer that further discussion is needed," adding, "In Yeouido parlance, this means 'opposition' in another form."
He continued, "Instead of saying 'Let's discuss more in the National Assembly,' he said 'There needs to be additional social discussion,' which raises doubts about whether he opposes National Assembly discussions and whether he has already lost his youthful spirit by using such wording."
Yoon emphasized, "If the People Power Party truly wants change and a new spirit, I hope they show it through actions, not words," and added, "I hope they now remove the legislative barricades they have set up in various standing committees."
