[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The authorities have launched industrial safety and health inspections at the headquarters and construction sites nationwide of Hyundai Engineering & Construction, where worker fatal accidents have occurred consecutively.
On the 14th, the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that it will begin industrial safety and health inspections targeting Hyundai Engineering & Construction's headquarters and construction sites nationwide.
The Ministry explained, "Hyundai Engineering & Construction is a construction company that experienced consecutive fatal accidents in 2019 and last year, requiring special attention and prevention regarding safety. This special measure comes after three fatal accidents occurred this year."
At Hyundai Engineering & Construction, a worker died from a fall at a construction site in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on January 29, followed by a worker who was caught in an accident and died at a construction site in Seosan, Chungnam Province on March 11. On the 27th of last month, a worker died after being hit by falling objects at a construction site in Incheon. From 2011 to recently, there have been a total of 48 major accidents at Hyundai Engineering & Construction, resulting in 51 deaths.
This simultaneous inspection of the headquarters and nationwide construction sites of a construction company where worker fatal accidents continue to occur is the third case following Taeyoung Construction and Daewoo Construction.
During the inspection of Hyundai Engineering & Construction's headquarters, the Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to focus on checking whether the following are properly in place: ▲ awareness and leadership of the CEO and management regarding safety and health management ▲ safety management goals ▲ personnel, organization, and budget execution system ▲ risk factor management system ▲ collection of workers' opinions ▲ safety and health management system to enhance the safety and health management capabilities of subcontractors.
For the nationwide construction site inspections, the Ministry plans to verify compliance with safety rules such as wearing protective gear through unannounced visits.

The Ministry emphasized, "For sites violating the law, we will respond strictly by suspending work, ordering corrective actions, and taking judicial measures to prevent additional accidents."
