Gwangju University Students Gift 'Recycled Plant Pots' to Shopkeepers in Front of School
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Students of Gwangju University (President Kim Hyukjong) created recycled material flower pots carrying messages of support for overcoming COVID-19 and environmental pollution campaigns, and gifted them to merchants in front of the school.
The Gwangju University Hosim Social Service Group announced on the 14th that they conducted the ‘Green Hope Sprout Project’ using disposable plastic coffee cups in collaboration with the Nam-gu Volunteer Center.
The disposable plastic coffee cups used this time were collected directly by students from coffee shops around the school where the cups were discarded.
The 500 recycled material flower pots planted with flowers such as roses and marguerites carried messages like “Dear small business owners! Let’s overcome COVID-19 together! We support you! Stay strong!” and “Did you use disposable products yesterday?” and were delivered to 83 stores in front of the school and on-campus rental businesses.
The ‘Green Hope Sprout Project ? Making Flower Pots Using Recycled Materials’ was promoted to support low carbon emissions and environmental protection campaigns as well as to encourage small business owners in the university’s surrounding commercial district to overcome COVID-19.
Along with this, Gwangju University will conduct a paper pack separate collection resource circulation project once a month until November in cooperation with the Nam-gu Volunteer Center to respond to the climate crisis. Milk cartons and other items will be collected in cooperation with stores around the school, then exchanged for tissue paper and batteries at the community center and delivered to neighbors in welfare blind spots.
Jang Bokyung, a third-year student in the Department of Defense Technology and volunteer camp leader at Gwangju University, said, “We are conducting this project with the hope that many citizens will participate in low carbon emission reduction campaigns,” adding, “Also, since merchants in front of the school are having difficulties due to COVID-19, we wanted to encourage them by giving flower gifts that brighten their mood even just by looking at them.”
