[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] On the 12th (local time), President Moon Jae-in held a summit meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Cornwall, UK, where he said, "I hope that Australia's strengths in renewable energy and Korea's hydrogen vehicles and batteries can be actively exchanged and that concrete cooperative projects will be discovered."
Prime Minister Morrison stated, "Australia's hydrogen energy production and Korea's hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen economy can create synergy," adding, "Technological cooperation is important in responding to climate change." President Moon responded, "I look forward to Korea and Australia moving toward a closer relationship through the prompt implementation of the RCEP signed last year."
Park Kyung-mi, spokesperson for the Blue House, explained, "President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting the UK to attend the G7, held a summit meeting with Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia at 10 a.m. on the 12th. The summit exceeded the scheduled 30 minutes and lasted 47 minutes, during which in-depth discussions were held on various topics."
Spokesperson Park added, "Both leaders agreed that Korea and Australia being jointly invited to the G7 summit reflects the high expectations of G7 countries regarding the roles of both nations in addressing various global issues in the post-COVID era."
The two leaders emphasized the need to enhance mutual cooperation, including in the economic sector. President Moon said, "I request continuous interest and support so that Korean companies can participate in Australian government infrastructure development projects such as the road construction project in northeastern Victoria and the Melbourne-Brisbane railway construction project."
Prime Minister Morrison said, "This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries, and I invite President Moon to Australia." President Moon replied, "Thank you for the invitation, and I will discuss specific visit schedules while monitoring the COVID-19 situation." Prime Minister Morrison proposed upgrading bilateral relations to a comprehensive partnership, to which President Moon expressed active agreement.
