Non-Curricular Volunteer Work to Receive Full Marks Again This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Chung-Ang University has decided to ease the minimum CSAT score requirements for the regional balance admission track in the early admission process, considering the difficulties faced by applicants due to COVID-19, and to broadly recognize eligibility for applicants with special talents in arts and physical education.
On the 11th, Chung-Ang University announced that it had received approval from the Korea Council for University Education for changes to the 2022 early admission process. The main changes in Chung-Ang University's admission process include ▲easing the minimum CSAT score requirements for the regional balance track ▲conducting non-face-to-face practical exams for acting and musical acting ▲applying a multi-stage selection process for team sports special talent admissions and easing eligibility requirements for physical education special talent applicants.
Chung-Ang University lowered the minimum CSAT score requirements for the regional balance track, which is only open to third-year high school students, under the student record-based admission track. It is important to note that the easing of minimum CSAT requirements varies by academic division.
For the humanities division, the total grade sum of three subjects among Korean, Math, English, and Social Studies was lowered from 6 or less to 7 or less. For Social Studies, only the highest scoring subject is considered, as before.
For the natural sciences division, the Seoul campus applies a total grade sum of 7 or less for three subjects among Korean, Math, English, and Science, while the Anseong campus applies a total grade sum of 6 or less for two subjects, maintaining the same standards but changing the method of applying the Science subject. Previously, the average of two Science subjects was used to determine if the minimum CSAT requirement was met, but now only the highest scoring Science subject is considered. The College of Pharmacy maintains the previous standard of a total grade sum of 5 or less across four subjects, with only the highest Science subject considered.
The non-face-to-face practical exam applies to the Department of Performing Arts' acting (acting, musical acting) selection under the practical/performance (practical type) category. While the evaluation of free acting or musical singing remains the same, the practical exam method changed from in-person evaluation to non-face-to-face video evaluation. Due to the secured safety from infection control through non-face-to-face evaluation, the first-stage selection ratio was increased from 5 times to 7 times the number of applicants.
Additionally, there are changes in the selection method for the practical/performance (special talent type) team sports category. Previously, selection was done in a single step by combining award records, student records, and aptitude practical exams, but now a multi-stage selection process is applied. First, 20 times the number of applicants are selected by combining 90% award records and 10% student records, then the final successful candidates are selected by adding 80% of the first-stage score and 20% aptitude practical exam score.
The policy to ease eligibility requirements, announced through the May early admission guidelines, has been maintained. For the physical education category under practical/performance (special talent type), considering the difficulty in accumulating achievements due to COVID-19, the restriction on the timing of achievement acquisition such as competition participation has been relaxed. Originally limited to the end of August, the period for acquiring competition achievements has been extended to the day before the application start date.
As in last year, all volunteer activity scores in extracurricular activities for applicants to the student record-based admission track, essay track, and practical type will be treated as perfect scores. The policy to conduct fair comprehensive student record evaluations, considering the circumstances of third-year high school students, will also be applied consistently.

Kim Young-hwa, Director of Admissions at Chung-Ang University, said, "As last year, we plan to thoroughly prepare and operate COVID-19 prevention measures during the admission process this year. We sincerely support the applicants who are doing their best despite the difficult situation and look forward to meeting them on campus in good health. We will do our best to operate the admission process so that the efforts of the applicants are not wasted."
