Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Reduce Fertilizer in Rice Farming to Improve Rice Quality
Excessive Use of Nitrogen Fertilizers Causes Yield Reduction and Environmental Pollution Effects
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] The Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced on the 10th that it is strengthening support for core cultivation techniques to improve the quality of rice produced this year and reduce carbon emissions.
The first technique involves maintaining deep water in the paddy fields for one month after rice transplanting, then draining the water for about 2 to 3 weeks, and re-flooding the fields when cracks appear on the paddy soil.
The second method is to shallowly flood the fields after mid-season drainage (40 to 30 days before heading), allowing the fields to dry naturally, then shallowly flooding again, repeating this process until the rice ears mature.
Farmers who properly implement these methods can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25.2% and 63.0%, respectively, compared to continuous flooding.
Additionally, the Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services recommends an appropriate nitrogen application rate of 7 kg per 10 ares for rice cultivation.
Excessive use of fertilizer can cause various side effects and environmental pollution, so it is essential to apply the recommended amount of fertilizer.
Furthermore, about 14 days after transplanting seedlings, farmers apply tillering fertilizer; however, those who have applied customized basal fertilizer in full should not apply additional fertilizer at this stage.
