640,000 Residents of Seongdong and Gwangjin No Longer Need to Go to Gangnam for Employment Counseling... Center Opens
"Enhancing Convenience for Over 5,000 Seongdong and Gwangjin National Employment Support Program Beneficiaries"
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Approximately 640,000 residents living in Seongdong and Gwangjin districts of Seoul no longer need to travel all the way to Gangnam for employment and welfare consultations. This is because a center providing consultations on the National Employment Support System, unemployment benefits, and more has been established in their neighborhood.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor, Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and the Seongdong and Gwangjin districts of Seoul announced that they held the opening ceremony of the Seongdong-Gwangjin Employment Welfare Plus Center at 2 p.m. on the 10th. Attendees included Employment Minister Ahn Kyung-duk, Democratic Party lawmaker Hong Ik-pyo, Seongdong District Mayor Jung Won-oh, Gwangjin District Mayor Kim Seon-gap, Seongdong District Council Chairman Lee Seong-su, and Gwangjin District Council Chairman Park Sam-rye.
The center is expected to provide employment and recruitment support, the National Employment Support System, unemployment benefits, welfare benefits, and financial and housing welfare services to approximately 640,000 residents and 330,000 businesses in Seongdong and Gwangjin districts. Until now, residents had to visit centers located in Songpa District south of the Han River. The government emphasized the significance of improved convenience in the National Employment Support System services for about 5,000 vulnerable employment groups, including low-income individuals, youth, and small business owners.
Minister Ahn said in his greeting, "To support private employment recovery, it is very important to strengthen the recruitment and employment support functions of employment centers that connect jobs and people." He added, "We will further enhance support for corporate recruitment and job seekers by discovering jobs in companies facing recruitment difficulties and providing recruitment support services tailored to the characteristics of hiring companies." He continued, "We will also strive to ensure that the National Employment Support System provides proper employment support services and establishes itself as an employment safety net for vulnerable employment groups."
Mayor Jung stated, "Integrated job and welfare services are essential for vulnerable employment groups who have been increasingly affected by COVID-19." He added, "Seongsu-dong has high accessibility and attracts companies and youth, so we expect a synergistic effect and will actively support the activation of the center." Mayor Kim said, "With the opening of the center, residents will be able to more conveniently receive customized employment welfare services that satisfy both employers and job seekers." He also requested, "Gwangjin District is also working hard to connect public job projects with private jobs through cooperation among the public, private, industry, and academia sectors, so we ask for your interest and encouragement."

As of this month, 174 centers are operating nationwide. Since the introduction of the employment insurance system in 1995, these centers have grown into major public service institutions across the country and have been converted into Employment Welfare Plus Centers since 2014 to provide welfare services as well.
