[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] According to a recent poll, President Moon Jae-in's approval rating, which had rebounded to nearly 40% following the South Korea-US summit, has declined again after just one week.
Realmeter conducted a survey commissioned by YTN from the 31st of last month to the 4th of this month, targeting 2,519 voters aged 18 and older nationwide over five days. The results showed that the positive evaluation of "President Moon is performing well in state affairs" was 38.3%, down 1.0 percentage point from the previous survey conducted in the fourth week of May. The negative evaluation rose by 1.6 percentage points to 57.9%.
By region, the approval rating dropped significantly in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (28.7%) by 4.0 percentage points and in Seoul (37.1%) by 3.6 percentage points compared to the previous week. By age group, the 50s (38.2%) and 70s (26.8%) saw declines of 4.9 and 3.4 percentage points respectively, indicating notable defections. However, approval ratings increased by 2.8 percentage points in the 40s (57.8%) and by 1.7 percentage points in the 30s (44.3%).
Regarding party support, the People Power Party rose by 2.4 percentage points to 38.0%, while the Democratic Party of Korea fell by 0.8 percentage points to 29.7%, resulting in a gap of 8.3 percentage points between the two parties, marking the 12th consecutive week with results outside the margin of error.
Notably, the People Power Party's support among centrists surged by 5.7 percentage points to 43.8% compared to the previous week. Regionally, support increased by 8.3 percentage points in Gwangju and Jeolla (17.2%) and by 7.2 percentage points in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (48.9%).
