“Noble Sacrifice for the Nation, We Will Not Forget”
Yoo Deok-yeol, Dongdaemun District Mayor, Cleans War Veterans' Memorial and Surroundings in Honor of National Veterans Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yu Deok-yeol) on the morning of the 2nd, in commemoration of the Month of Patriots and Veterans, undertook maintenance of the War Veterans Memorial Monument and its surrounding environment located in Jeonnong-dong Village Square (150-62 Jeonnong-dong) to honor the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs.
Mayor Yu Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu, along with heads of veterans organizations and 45 national veterans, participated in the maintenance work. After cleaning the monument engraved with the names and achievements of 4,547 war veterans, the attendees held a moment of silence and laid flowers to inspire the spirit of patriotism and remember the preciousness of peace and freedom.
The War Veterans Memorial Monument was established in 2014 and consists of three sections on approximately 100㎡ of land: the Wall of Loyalty, which harmonizes past, present, and future; a main sculpture; and bas-relief statues.
The Wall of Loyalty is engraved with the names of 4,547 war veterans who survived or died in the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
The main sculpture features a Taegeuk (the Korean national symbol) at the top under the theme “The Unextinguishable Light of Loyalty.” This symbolically represents the growth and development of the Republic of Korea through the sacrifices of the veterans and the eternal light of the nation. On the right side of the bas-relief statue, there is a sculptural depiction of soldiers charging up a hill to reclaim lost land, and on the left side, a scene of rescuing a wounded comrade in the jungles of Vietnam is artistically expressed.

Mayor Yu Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu stated, “Although it is regrettable that veterans’ events have been greatly reduced due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation, we will never forget that the peace and freedom we enjoy today are thanks to the noble sacrifices of countless veterans.” He added, “We will implement policies that fully honor the veterans.”
