[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The National Fire Agency announced on the 2nd that it will operate the "Personal Protective Equipment Safety Management Training Course" five times from April to November this year to enhance the safety and health of firefighters through systematic management of personal protective equipment.

Personal protective equipment such as fire-resistant clothing is essential gear that protects firefighters' bodies and lives at various disaster sites, and it is important to maintain normal function and operational status through regular inspections and maintenance.

The National Fire Agency established and implemented the Fire Equipment Management Work Processing Standards (Directive) on January 7th to integrate the previously sporadically regulated equipment management standards, as equipment is becoming more electronic and diverse, and safety and health requirements are increasing, making equipment management more complex and difficult.

Accordingly, to establish standards for systematic management of personal protective equipment, a personal protective equipment management manual was created, and the personal protective equipment safety management training course was newly established to educate fire equipment managers and users on inspection, cleaning, repair, and storage methods.

The personal protective equipment safety management training course targets 160 equipment managers from fire agencies nationwide (fire headquarters and fire stations) and provides safety management education on six essential protective equipment items including self-contained breathing apparatus. Equipment managers who complete the training will conduct in-house training for affiliated firefighters who actually use the fire equipment to share personal protective equipment safety management methods.

This training course is a three-day practical group training that covers overall safety management methods such as inspection, cleaning, and repair of personal protective equipment, as well as specialized content including the Gas Safety Training Institute's "Practical Training on Air Charging Devices" and the National Fire Research Institute's "Training on Harmful Substances Remaining on Protective Equipment After Field Activities."

A National Fire Agency official stated, "We will expand personal protective equipment safety management training so that firefighters can acquire a high level of safety management capability," adding, "By enhancing the safety and health of firefighters, we will be able to provide continuous fire services to the public."

Meanwhile, the National Fire Agency plans to organize and operate the personal protective equipment safety management training course as a regular curriculum starting in 2022.
