Gwangjin-gu Utilizes Big Data for Pest Control of Mosquitoes, Cockroaches, and More
Gwangjin-gu and Ministry of the Interior and Safety Collaborate on Pest-Related Complaint Data Analysis... Predicting Pest-Prone Areas for Preemptive Control... Planned Nationwide Expansion
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) is introducing predictive pest control using big data for mosquitoes, cockroaches, and other pests in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (Minister Jeon Hae-cheol).
The district, working with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, analyzes and predicts monthly pest-related complaint areas and implements proactive pest control measures.
First, based on data such as the number of pest-related complaints, buildings, and resident population owned by the district, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety combined and analyzed external data including small business information and weather data.
The analysis divided all areas where pest control is possible into 100m×100m grids, predicting the probability of pest complaints for each section and visualizing this on a map.
The data analysis showed that weather conditions such as temperature and precipitation, as well as urban environment factors like building age and number, are major causes of pest complaints, allowing identification of locations requiring preemptive pest control each month.
Additionally, analysis of the effectiveness of 'pest repellers' installed in residential areas revealed that mosquito-related complaints in areas with pest repellers were approximately 62.5% lower compared to areas without them.
Accordingly, the district plans to actively utilize these analysis results in pest control operations.
Until June, focused pest control will be conducted primarily on predicted priority areas for cockroach control, and a dedicated mosquito pest control disinfection team will be formed to carry out disinfection and mosquito larva eradication activities in areas expected to have frequent mosquito complaints until October.
Furthermore, plans to gradually expand the operation of pest repellers in areas with high mosquito complaint rates will also be considered.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to expand the big data-based predictive pest control results from Gwangjin-gu nationwide in the future.
