This is an analysis of five years of marriage and divorce statistics of Ulsan citizens.
Ulsan City released on the 28th an analysis of marriage and divorce statistics in Ulsan over the past five years from 2016 to 2020, in celebration of Family Month in May.
At what age do people in Ulsan tend to get married the most?
The number of marriages in Ulsan has steadily decreased over the past five years, and the number of divorces has shown a declining trend since 2018.
In particular, 2020 showed a noticeable decrease in marriages due to the impact of COVID-19 and other factors.
The number of marriages in Ulsan in 2020 was 4,737, a decrease of 705 cases (13%) compared to the previous year, and a 32.4% decrease compared to 7,006 cases in 2016.
The crude marriage rate, which indicates the number of marriages per 1,000 people, was 4.2 in 2020, down 0.5 from the previous year and 1.8 from 2016, a 30% decrease.
The average age at first marriage in Ulsan in 2020 was 32.74 years for husbands and 30.33 years for wives, an increase of 0.39 years for husbands and 0.59 years for wives compared to 2016.
The wife's average age at first marriage has increased for five consecutive years, while the husband's average age at first marriage has slightly decreased since 2018.
Last year, the most common age group for marriage among husbands was 30-34 years with 1,769 cases (37.9%), followed by 25-29 years with 1,157 cases (24.4%), and 35-39 years with 745 cases (15.7%).
For wives, the most common age group was 25-29 years with 1,802 cases (38.0%), followed by 30-34 years with 1,428 cases (30.1%), and 35-39 years with 475 cases (10.0%).
Notably, "late-life marriages" around the age of 60 have significantly increased over the past five years.
Looking at the changes by age group, marriages of husbands aged 60-64 increased by 27.3%, from 50 cases in 2016 to 70 cases in 2020; marriages of wives aged 55-59 increased by 30.2%, from 96 to 125 cases; and wives aged 60-64 increased by 14.7%, from 34 to 39 cases.
Regarding types of marriage, "both first marriages" accounted for 3,690 cases, or 77.9% of the total, while "both remarriages" accounted for 588 cases, or 12.4%.
"Husband's first marriage + wife's remarriage" was 313 cases (6.6%), and "husband's remarriage + wife's first marriage" was 138 cases (2.9%).
The number of divorces in Ulsan has been decreasing again after an increase in 2018.
Last year's number of divorces was 2,460, the lowest in five years. This is a decrease of 74 cases (2.9%) compared to the previous year and 60 cases (2.4%) compared to 2016.
The average age at divorce last year was 48.44 years for husbands and 45.54 years for wives, showing a continuous increasing trend over the past five years.
By age group, divorces among husbands were highest in the 45-49 age group with 415 cases (16.9%), followed by 40-44 with 403 cases (16.4%), and 50-54 with 377 cases (15.3%).
For wives, the 45-49 age group was highest with 425 cases (17.3%), followed by 35-39 with 395 cases (16.1%), and 40-44 with 384 cases (15.6%).
A notable feature is the significant increase in "late-life divorces" among people in their 60s over the past five years.
Looking at the changes by age group, divorces among husbands aged 65 and over increased by 89.2%, from 83 cases in 2016 to 157 cases last year; divorces among husbands aged 60-64 increased by 84%, from 119 to 219 cases.
For wives, divorces among those aged 65 and over increased by 119.4%, from 36 cases in 2016 to 79 cases; divorces among wives aged 60-64 increased the most by 128.4%, from 86 cases in 2016 to 153 cases in 2020.
Regarding divorce by duration of marriage last year, divorces within "4 years or less" accounted for the highest at 20.7% (510 cases), followed by "5-9 years" at 17.7% (435 cases). However, compared to 2016, these figures decreased by 19.7% and 8.6%, respectively.
On the other hand, "late-life divorces" after 30 years of marriage have shown a continuous increasing trend over the past five years. In 2020, divorces after 30 years of marriage numbered 323 cases, a 70% increase of 133 cases compared to 2016.
