HMM's 16,000 TEU Class 6th Vessel 'HMM Raon'... First Departure on the 30th
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] HMM announced that it held the naming ceremony for the 16,000 TEU-class ultra-large container ship No. 6, ‘HMM Raon,’ on the 27th.
‘HMM Raon’ will be deployed on the North Europe route, which is jointly operated with members of The Alliance. It is scheduled to make its maiden call at Busan Port on the 30th and will begin full-scale operations on the Europe route.
‘HMM Raon’ is a vessel built as part of the government’s five-year maritime reconstruction plan. It is the sixth container ship delivered out of eight 16,000 TEU-class vessels contracted with Hyundai Heavy Industries in September 2018.
By deploying all eight 16,000 TEU-class vessels on the Europe route by next month, HMM will complete securing a total of 20 ultra-large vessels, including 12 of the world’s largest 24,000 TEU-class container ships built as part of the government’s five-year maritime reconstruction plan in 2018 and acquired last year.
HMM had planned to sequentially take delivery of eight 16,000 TEU-class ultra-large vessels starting from mid-April. However, to alleviate difficulties faced by export companies due to a shortage of shipping capacity, two vessels?the first ship ‘HMM Nuri’ and the second ship ‘HMM Gaon’?were deployed early on the Europe route in March. Subsequently, the third ship ‘HMM Garam,’ the fourth ship ‘HMM Mir,’ and the fifth ship ‘HMM Hanbada’ have also been successively deployed on the Europe route.
President Bae Jae-hoon said, “By securing competitive vessels, we will establish a foundation for mid- to long-term profitability improvement, achieve both quantitative and qualitative growth, and continue a vigorous voyage to leap forward as a global top-class shipping company.”
