Park Ji-won, Director of the National Intelligence Service, Arrives in New York to Begin U.S. Visit Schedule
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Park Ji-won, Director of the National Intelligence Service, arrived in New York on the morning of the 26th (local time) to begin his visit to the United States.
Director Park arrived at New York Kennedy International Airport (JFK) around 11 a.m. that day and left the airport immediately without responding to reporters' questions.
Director Park is expected to travel to Washington DC to meet with U.S. intelligence officials, including William Burns, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). There is also a possibility of meeting with Sung Kim, the new U.S. Special Representative for North Korea at the State Department.
Since the South Korea-U.S. summit agreed that President Moon Jae-in and President Joe Biden would respect the 2018 Panmunjom Declaration between North and South Korea and the Singapore Joint Statement between North Korea and the U.S., and continue dialogue with North Korea, the heads of South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies are expected to discuss ways to lead North Korea-U.S. talks as a follow-up measure.
Although there was speculation that Director Park might start his U.S. visit in New York by contacting the North Korean mission to the United Nations, the consensus is that this is unlikely given recent circumstances.
