The spark that ignited the recent donation relay spreading at Dongmyeong University was lit by the newly appointed President Jeon Ho-hwan.
Even before the inauguration ceremony was held and within less than a month of his term starting, the university surroundings began to respond.
President Jeon attracted attention by leading the establishment of the first-ever domestic university innovation education model with three "no's"?no grade levels, no credits, and no teaching?called the Do-ing University.
The first development fund for nurturing talent at Do-ing University was donated by Seo Ui-taek, chairman of the Dongmyeong Cultural Foundation school corporation.
The second donor was an anonymous Busan entrepreneur who generously gave 100 million KRW to President Jeon.
The third and fourth donors were Kim Ui-wook, CEO of Daon Logistics, and Kim Se-gyu, CEO of Smart Market Service Co., Ltd. The fifth donor was President Jeon Ho-hwan himself, who contributed 10 million KRW.
The donors recalled that President Jeon often said, "Job creation and the regional economy depend on the value creation of local universities."
They share the sentiment of establishing the practical Do-ing University and agree on the importance of joint development among businesses and universities in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam during this period of change.
One donor explained the reason for giving: "The longevity of companies and universities ultimately depends on people. Both the Southeast region’s businesses and universities must sustain development for over 100 years and become key players in the prosperity of cities and the nation."
Another donor expressed support for Do-ing University, which cultivates survival skills for any future world through challenge and passion, communication and empathy, respect and consideration, physical strength, and collaboration.
President Jeon responded, "I am grateful to those who have sparked interest in nurturing 'Do-ing talents' who challenge and practice to find various wise answers (賢答), not just one correct answer."
He also said, "As the 'Do-ing President,' I will foster 'bojagi-style' talents who embrace everything, rather than just putting things into a bag, through innovative education that fully brings out entrepreneurial spirit."
President Jeon is reportedly aiming to recruit 1,000 donors who each contribute 1 million KRW annually over his four-year term to stabilize the university’s finances.
The newly established Do-ing University at Dongmyeong University will offer three majors: Entrepreneurship, Digital Performing Arts, and YouTube Creator.
The Entrepreneurship major cultivates the spirit and capabilities of daring entrepreneurs who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution society.
The Digital Performing Arts major develops the ability to combine the artistic sensibility of Hallyu, such as K-pop, breakdancing, and acting, with digital technology.
The YouTube Creator major fosters comprehensive skills to create unique content and manage channels in the YouTube world, which is a trend of the times.
