Gwangju Seo-gu Joins the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Declaration'
Participation in the 2021 Seoul Summit Pre-Event Carbon Neutrality Special Session
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Daeseok) has joined the carbon neutrality declaration.
Seo-gu announced on the 25th that it declared carbon neutrality by 2050 along with 243 local governments nationwide by participating in the ‘Special Session on Carbon Neutrality Practice’ jointly hosted by the Ministry of Environment and the Carbon Neutral Local Government Practice Alliance.
Carbon neutrality means minimizing greenhouse gas emissions that cause global temperature rise and increasing carbon sinks such as forests to make the net greenhouse gas emissions ‘0’.
Seo-gu, which participated in the special session on carbon neutrality held as a pre-event of the 2021 Seoul Summit at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul the day before, shared experiences and opinions on the role of local governments for carbon neutrality and specific implementation plans, and discussed cooperation measures.
So far, Seo-gu has promoted more than 40 detailed projects in seven major areas including air and water quality, and waste policies by establishing a comprehensive plan for climate crisis response and leading carbon neutrality city creation, starting with the proclamation ceremony for climate crisis emergency action.
Going forward, it plans to accelerate the creation of a leading city for climate crisis response and carbon neutrality by collecting opinions from various sectors such as civic groups, businesses, and administration.

A Seo-gu official said, “We will carry out a climate action network project that allows voluntary participation in greenhouse gas reduction activities such as energy saving, resource recycling, and waste reduction that can be practiced in daily life through village-level, group-based, and community meetings,” and added, “We ask for active interest and cooperation from citizens in practicing carbon neutrality.”
