In December 2012, the Wando Maritime Police conducted marine cleanup operations for five days after an 82-ton tugboat moored at Cheongbyeol Port, Bogil, Nohwa-do, Wando-gun, tilted to starboard and sank during low tide, causing marine pollution.
At that time, the cleanup costs were charged to the ship owner according to the polluter pays principle, amounting to about 30 million won, which was the second highest cleanup cost imposed by the Wando Maritime Police since 2006.
Mr. A, the shipowner who recently completed the full payment of the cleanup costs, said, "One month before the accident, the validity period of the ship insurance expired, so insurance coverage was not possible. Although my financial situation was difficult, I tried to pay the cleanup costs whenever I had money to fulfill my civic duty, and now that I have fully paid, I feel relieved."
