Gyeonggi-do Establishes System for 'Livestock Environment Improvement'... Expected to Resolve Odor Issues
Enforcement of the 'Ordinance on Livestock Environment Improvement and Support' from May 20
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Institutional grounds have been established to systematically carry out various support projects aimed at improving livestock environments in Gyeonggi Province.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 24th that "the 'Ordinance on the Improvement and Support of Livestock Environment in Gyeonggi Province,' which analyzes the fundamental causes of livestock barn odors in the province and aims to reduce and resolve them, officially came into effect on the 20th."
The ordinance's key feature is that it stipulates the responsibility of Gyeonggi Province to provide administrative and financial support necessary for improving the livestock environment, including reducing barn odors.
Accordingly, the province can implement various projects such as ▲support for livestock manure treatment and odor reduction facilities and equipment ▲support for creating a clean livestock environment ▲modernization of aging barns ▲activation of livestock manure compost and liquid fertilizer ▲livestock environment education.
Additionally, it has become possible for the provincial government to collect related data from livestock farms or conduct on-site visits and investigations.
The ordinance also includes provisions to establish and operate the 'Gyeonggi Province Livestock Environment Improvement Committee,' which will deliberate on matters related to the establishment and modification of support plans and review and adjust the appropriateness of project plans.

There have been ongoing calls for comprehensive and detailed support to fundamentally resolve issues, as odor complaints in the Gyeonggi area sharply increased from 1,496 cases at the end of 2018 to 2,291 cases at the end of 2019 due to urban development and the increase of return-to-farming and return-to-village populations.
