President Moon's Meeting with US House Leadership: "Complete Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula Must Be Achieved"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in, visiting the United States, met with the House leadership to request the U.S. Congress's interest and support for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
On the 20th (local time), President Moon held a meeting with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House leaders, stating, "The complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a task that must be realized for the permanent peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula and peace and stability in the region."
President Moon evaluated the Biden administration's North Korea policy formulation and emphasized that the early resumption of North Korea-U.S. dialogue is key to the success of the Biden administration's North Korea policy. He also mentioned the U.S. Congress's promotion of the 'Bills and Resolutions for Peace on the Korean Peninsula' and highly praised the efforts of the U.S. Congress supporting a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue.
He also emphasized the economic cooperation partnership between South Korea and the U.S. President Moon stated that since Korean companies' semiconductor and electric vehicle battery production capabilities hold an important position in the global supply chain, the government will cooperate to ensure that supply chain cooperation between the two countries in advanced fields is faithfully implemented.
Regarding COVID-19 vaccines, he evaluated the U.S.'s leadership in expanding vaccine access internationally, including vaccine support, and expressed hope that South Korea and the U.S. will coordinate health security policies, including vaccine supply, more closely.
On U.S.-China and South Korea-Japan relations, he said, "Since the stable development of U.S.-China relations is also an important issue for us, we will play a role in the stable development of U.S.-China relations based on the South Korea-U.S. alliance," and regarding South Korea-Japan relations, "We will resolve historical issues through dialogue while strengthening practical cooperation in areas such as climate change and COVID-19."
President Moon also highly praised President Biden's climate change leadership, including rejoining the Paris Agreement immediately after taking office, and emphasized that the mutual linkage between the April Climate Summit and the upcoming 'P4G 2021 Seoul Green Future Summit' at the end of this month is a major example of climate change cooperation between South Korea and the U.S.
He expressed concern over the recent frequent crimes targeting Asian Americans in the U.S., mentioning the Atlanta shooting incident. He highly evaluated the legislative efforts for the 'COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act' and pledged support for the U.S. Congress's efforts.
