Peace Statue of Girl Reinstalled in Japan
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Statue of Peace will be exhibited again in Japan.
According to Kyodo News on the 18th, the Japanese civic group 'Fujiyuuten (不自由展) · Aichi Group Continuing Afterwards (愛知)' will hold an exhibition featuring the Statue of Peace from July 6 to 11 at the 'Nagoya Civic Gallery Sakae' located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The exhibition will include the Statue of Peace that was showcased at the 2019 'Expression of Non-Freedom Exhibition · Afterwards (不自由展?その後)' and video works depicting scenes of burning portraits of Hirohito. Hirohito was the Emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989.
These works were presented at the 2019 art event 'Aichi Triennale' but faced threats and protests from right-wing groups, which led to the suspension of the exhibition.
'Expression of Non-Freedom Exhibition · Afterwards' was the first case of displaying the Statue of Peace at a public event supported by the Japanese government, and some groups who disagreed with the purpose of the works raised objections to this.
