Ruling Party Leadership Visits Cheongwadae, Proposes "Development of Indigenous Vaccine and Youth Housing Supply Measures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 14th, the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea proposed measures related to COVID-19 vaccination and expanding communication with the public during a meeting invited by President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House. There was also a proposal regarding the expansion of housing supply measures for young people.
Senior Spokesperson Ko Yong-jin of the Democratic Party conveyed the contents of the proposals from the new party leadership, including Representative Song Young-gil and Floor Leader Yoon Ho-jung, as well as President Moon’s response, during a briefing at the National Assembly Communication Office on the same day.
Senior Spokesperson Ko said, "(The party leadership) proposed measures to prevent 'no-shows' for vaccine appointments," adding, "Just as an app was developed and commercialized early in the pandemic to manage mask supply, we requested the development of a similar system." Senior Spokesperson Ko also stated, "With the acceleration of vaccination speed creating conditions for economic improvement in the third quarter, the party will discuss next year’s budget measures with the government to support this," and added, "(The party leadership) requested that the President give special instructions to the fiscal authorities to ensure that fiscal policy can play its role."
Senior Spokesperson Ko emphasized that the party leadership actively proposed the necessity of developing a domestically produced COVID-19 vaccine to President Moon. He said, "Regarding the COVID-19 situation, there were opinions that various measures are needed to prepare for the emergence of variant viruses, and that the development of a domestic vaccine is necessary," adding, "Furthermore, there was an opinion that bold and full support, such as advance vaccine purchases, is required."
Senior Spokesperson Ko also conveyed, "Representative Song suggested that while discussions on easing real estate taxes are ongoing, housing supply measures for young people living in so-called 'Hell Joseon' conditions, such as rooftop rooms and semi-basements, who cannot even dream of owning a home, should be strengthened." He continued, "President Moon said that although the government has been preparing to supply public rental housing without delay, housing prices have surged rapidly, leading to a flood of demands and complaints in the market, so it is important to reflect on supply measures and prevent speculative demand, and he said he would take these into careful consideration in policy."
Regarding communication with the public, Senior Spokesperson Ko said, "We also conveyed the opinion that it would be good if the President could increase opportunities for communication with the public during the remaining period, similar to the 4th anniversary special speech."
