The event was attended by Mayor Lee Yong-seop, City Council Chairman Kim Yong-jip, Gwangju Disabled Park Golf Association President Ryu Ki-jun, Gwangju Park Golf Association President Lee Yong-beom, among others, and proceeded in order with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, progress report, and on-site inspection.
The renovation project of Yeomju Park Golf Course was promoted after being selected in last year's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Life SOC project competition.
In particular, a total project cost of 580 million KRW, including 400 million KRW in national funds, was invested to extend hole distances, install automatic watering facilities, replace natural and artificial turf, and renovate various facilities.
Through this, a newly created environment was established where citizens can fully enjoy park golf.
Yeomju Park Golf Course consists of a total site area of 11,847㎡, with 9 holes on the course and 2 holes for putting practice, and operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer) except on holidays.
On weekends, it opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the convenience of users.
Park golf is a compound word of park and golf, a lifestyle-oriented sport where people can enjoy exercise and social activities. It is especially popular among people with disabilities and the elderly, and the number of enthusiasts has recently increased rapidly.
In fact, the average daily users of Yeomju Park Golf Course reached about 160 before COVID-19.
Through this renovation, it is expected to meet the rapidly increasing demand for park golf and to have effects such as guaranteeing the basic right to sports by creating a living sports environment for marginalized groups including people with disabilities.
