Tomorrow, the Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Ceremony Will Be Held
The Third Since the Designation of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Day
The 127th Anniversary Ceremony of the Donghak Peasant Revolution will be held at 3 p.m. on the 11th at Heungnyemun Plaza in Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul. This event honors the noble spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution (1894), which pursued a world where people live with dignity and resisted Japanese imperialist encroachment on national sovereignty. Since the designation of May 11th as the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Day in 2019, this is the third ceremony conducted by the government.
The ceremony will be attended by Hwang Hee, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, as well as descendants of the Donghak Peasant Revolution participants, and representatives from Cheondogyo and related commemorative organizations. Through the national ceremony, progress report, thematic video screening, honorary restoration ceremony, commemorative speeches, and performances (Saeya Saeya Parangsaeya), the spirit of that day 127 years ago will be remembered.

Since the enactment of the "Special Act on the Honor Restoration of Participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution" in 2004, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has identified 3,686 participants and registered 11,797 descendants. Currently, a comprehensive survey of historic sites and commemorative facilities distributed across various regions is underway.
