[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 4th that it held a meeting of the ‘Yurim Elementary Small School Revitalization Promotion Committee’ in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the Yurim-myeon Office.
This meeting marked the official start of the Yurim Elementary Small School Revitalization project, which was selected as a Gyeongnam Province public contest project in early February. It was an occasion to pledge the successful promotion of the project by reviewing the main directions of the project and discussing specific operation plans of the steering committee through the formation of the promotion committee.
The promotion committee consists of 12 members including Hamyang-gun, Hamyang Office of Education, Yurim-myeon Office, Yurim Elementary School, the General Alumni Association, the Parents' Association, and local residents. Their roles include ▲consulting on stable completion of the project and sustainable residential conditions ▲establishing and reviewing criteria for tenant selection ▲proposing communication and integration methods between tenants and existing village residents.
The Gyeongnam Small School Revitalization project aims to contribute to the activation of small schools and rural areas by enabling elementary students and their parents from outside the area to settle stably through the construction of rental housing and improvement of residential conditions, in response to school closures caused by the decrease in the number of students in rural areas and the increasing risk of regional extinction due to population decline.
Gyeongsangnam-do, Hamyang-gun, and the Provincial Office of Education are jointly investing a total of 3.5 billion KRW, with 500 million KRW each and LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation) contributing up to 2 billion KRW. By February 2022, they will complete the construction of rental housing, vacant house renovation projects, and improvement of school commuting routes and other residential condition projects.
Once the construction of rental housing and vacant house renovation projects are completed, households with elementary school children nationwide are expected to relocate, revitalizing schools and village communities at risk of extinction.
By May, they will discover and propose additional residential condition improvement projects and hold project briefing sessions for village residents. In July, LH will begin construction of rental housing; in August, a briefing session for student and parent recruitment will be held; in October, recruitment and selection of rental housing tenants will take place; and in February next year, students and parents will move in.
