According to the KCCI on the 4th, Chairman Chey plans to visit the National Assembly in the afternoon of the 13th to pay a courtesy call on National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug. This will be the first time since Chey took office as KCCI chairman in March that he will visit the National Assembly in person. He is also scheduled to meet sequentially with the leadership of both ruling and opposition parties. He is expected to meet Song Young-gil, the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Kim Gi-hyeon, the acting leader of the People Power Party and floor leader.
As this is his first visit since taking office, no specific agenda has been set, but it is expected that he will convey the business community’s stance on corporate management and overall economic issues. There are concerns within and outside the business sector regarding the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which is expected to have enforcement ordinances prepared as early as this month, and the Labor Union Act, which is set to be enforced in July. Controversy also remains over the Win-Win Cooperation Act being promoted by the ruling party and government. There is also considerable scope for legislative support in the National Assembly for small business owners and industries affected by COVID-19.
According to a public perception survey on the direction of National Assembly legislation released by the KCCI in March, nine out of ten respondents viewed the current legal system as outdated. Bills demanded by the business community, such as the Service Development Basic Act, which has been pending for ten years, and the Sandbox Three Acts, whose special periods are ending, have stalled. This underscores the importance of the National Assembly’s role in improving the corporate management environment.
