Samsung-Seoul National University Hospital Holds Donation Agreement Ceremony for 'Pediatric Cancer and Rare Disease Support'
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] The family of the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee and Seoul National University Hospital held a donation agreement ceremony for the 'Support Project for Pediatric Cancer and Rare Disease Patients' on the afternoon of the 3rd at Seoul National University Children's Hospital.
Attending the donation agreement ceremony were Kim Yeon-su, Director of Seoul National University Hospital; Kim Han-seok, Director of Seoul National University Children's Hospital; Sung In-hee, President of Samsung Social Contribution Division; and Lee In-yong, President of Samsung Electronics CR Division. Seoul National University Hospital decided to name this donation project the 'Lee Kun-hee Pediatric Cancer and Rare Disease Patient Support Project' and presented a plaque of appreciation to the bereaved family.

View original imageThe hospital appointed Kim Han-seok, Director of Seoul National University Children's Hospital, as the head of the project team, and plans to operate the project with an operating committee and a working committee that will include medical staff from not only Seoul National University but also children's hospitals nationwide. The project team plans to establish the project promotion system by September and start the first-year project from November.
Director Kim of Seoul National University Hospital said, "We are grateful to the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee for supporting the resolution of rare diseases in children in our country," adding, "We will build this donation into an unprecedented 'medical platform' for treating pediatric cancer and rare disease patients in Korea to honor the donor's great will."
President Sung, attending the donation agreement ceremony on behalf of Chairman Lee's family, emphasized, "Business, society, economy, and management all start with people," and added, "'Humanism (人本主義),' which places people at the center of everything, was the fundamental management philosophy that Chairman Lee held."
He continued, "Chairman Lee's philosophy, which the bereaved family shares now, was that if it could save children patients facing life-and-death crises, spending 100 billion won would not be regrettable."

On the 28th of last month, Chairman Lee's family expressed their intention to support 300 billion won for children suffering from pediatric cancer and rare diseases who are unable to receive proper treatment due to expensive medical costs. The family's donation will be used over the next 10 years for genetic testing and treatment, chemotherapy, and rare disease new drug treatments for approximately 17,000 pediatric patients with cancer and rare diseases. Additionally, 90 billion won will be invested in building infrastructure for clinical research and drug development.
