[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A soldier posted a revealing statement that he suffered a six-week diagnosed fracture after being assaulted by a military officer during a sports game at an army unit, yet received no action from the unit and is currently suffering from severe trauma.
On the 1st, the Facebook page 'Delivering Messages on Behalf of the Army Training Center' posted a message from Mr. A, who identified himself as a soldier belonging to the 22nd Division, stating, "On January 5th this year, during combat physical training, I was assaulted by an officer from another company while playing futsal."
According to Mr. A, during the game, Officer B from another company approached him and grabbed his collar to threaten and verbally abuse him every time he lost the ball. Eventually, Officer B ran up to Mr. A, who was standing without the ball, and struck his right knee. As a result, Mr. A was diagnosed with a patella fracture requiring six weeks of treatment.
Mr. A claimed, "There were many officers around at the time of the incident, but none protected me." He added, "Instead, when I tried to leave the futsal field, the officers shouted, 'What do you think you did well to leave?'"
He further reported that Officer B tried to prevent him from reporting the incident. Additionally, he claimed, "The company administrative officer, who said he would investigate the facts, told me not to report it any further and not to inform my parents."
Mr. A said, "I received no protective measures on the day of the incident," and later requested evacuation due to knee pain. With the help of the division medical officer and others, he reported the case to the military police.
Moreover, Mr. A stated, "Under the unit's instructions, the perpetrator officer obtained my parents' phone number." He also claimed that Officer B called his father directly and absurdly said, "I never hit Mr. A, but I am willing to settle."
Mr. A expressed his frustration, saying, "I served the military as diligently as others. I received commendations during the Army Training Center education and training course and was awarded the best in class in the latter half. I truly do not understand what I did wrong." He also revealed, "Since January, I have been undergoing psychiatric treatment for anxiety symptoms, trauma, and insomnia."
Meanwhile, the commander of the Army 22nd Division apologized regarding the assault incident in a statement on the 2nd. He said, "I sincerely offer my deepest condolences and apologies to the soldier and his parents who were hurt by this incident," and bowed his head, saying, "During the futsal game, the soldier suffered a serious patella fracture caused by an officer, and there were inappropriate behaviors by officers during the subsequent handling process."
He added, "After the incident, the military investigative agency conducted a strict investigation of the officer involved, and criminal procedures are currently underway according to regulations," and stated, "Those responsible who neglected command measures and acted inappropriately at the time of the incident will be appropriately disciplined based on the results of the inspection investigation in accordance with unit regulations."
